While Ganesh Visarjan is marked with pomp and show, the celebrations will be different this year due to surge in Covid cases. The authorities have requested devotees to perform the ritual of Ganesh Visarjan at their homes or nearest immersion facility instead of going to big water bodies.

It can be often wondered why Ganesh Visarjan is performed on the occasion of Anant Chaturdashi. An important point regarding the immersion of Shri Ganesh Idol is that the divinity infused in the mud Idol by consecration cannot remain in it beyond one day. This means, that no matter when the Ganesh Idol is immersed, the divinity in it is already lost on the second day.

Hence, it is most appropriate in all aspects to immerse the Idol of any Deity on that very day or the next after performing uttarpuja.

If soyar or sutak is being observed in the family, get the vrat Vowed religious observance of Shri Ganesh Chaturthi performed by a priest. Similarly, immersion of the Idol on the decided day itself without waiting for an event such as a delivery etc.

One might ask that if this is so, how will devotees benefit from a twentyone-day worship of Shri Ganesh Idol during the Ganesh festival. The answer is — Though the divinity in the Idol is destroyed, the Chaitanya Divine consciousness remains in the Idol for 21 days. Again, since the Idol is ritualistically worshipped during the Ganesh festival, the Chaitanya in the Idol can increase as per the intensity of bhav Spiritual emotion of the devotees.

Due to Chaitanya in Idols of Shri Ganapati on immersion it purifies the water. With the flowing water, this Chaitanya reaches far and wide and many people benefit from them. This water evaporates, too; hence, it makes the atmosphere sattvik Sattva-predominant. However, some people view the immersion of the Idol as an act that causes water pollution, famine etc.

As a remedy on this problem, some anti-Hindus make a ridiculous appeal to the people to donate Idols instead of immersing them. Besides being unscientific, the donation of Idols is an insult to Shri Ganesh.

The following are the reasons why the donation of Idol is unscientific. Immersing an Idol that is consecrated on Shri Ganesh Chaturthi in the Bhadrapad month is a religious ritual as per the scriptures. That again paved for plastic, plaster of Paris etc. Those who cannot afford to or having inconvenience to keep the idol and do poojas and offerings for more days, restrict only for a day, one and half day five days etc.

Not only lord Ganesh but also all idols of gods and goddess are immersed in water like ponds, lakes, rivers, sea or well. We worshiped them during their occation. Then we immersed them to go back their places heaven. Now a days many harmful colours are used in clay idols.

The colours are hazardous to fresh water. Natural colour should be used in idols. So, in many places clay idols are immersed in soil away from fresh water. Lord Ganesha listens to the prayers of the devotees for 10 days and takes away all the worries and tensions of his devotees with him.

It is believed that he takes away concerns, pains and worries of his devotes along with him and ends it in the form of Visarjan means farewell. The significance of visarjan means farewell of worries. Another meaning to it is, everything that exists has an end. Through this act of immersion of the idol in water, it signifies that every life that is born, that exists, has an end to it. I don't know from which era that Ganesh Chathurthi was being celebrated, but once my grand father told me that, the tradition of immersion of idols in water after worshiping was began in a king rule.

That king was an atheist and also so rude, he wanted his people to worship only him. People who are scared of King, worship God in secret with clay idols at home. When soldiers come with search warrant, they immerse the idol in water, soon it became shapeless and they could escape.

Why Ganesha idol? U might have seen in any pooja, a handful of clay will be held tightly and kept at the top. Yes, it is believed that Ganesha can be worshiped with that inverted cone shaped clay in olden days at home. Generally the soldiers come in search of idols at home during special days and especially on Ganesha Chathurthi and people worship with this clay soon and dispose it before the soldiers knock at their door.
