When was eastlands built

AFTER years of anticipation and almost two decades of hard work, the new Eastland is just days away from opening. The launch of the first stage of the redevelopment on October 29 marks nearly 50 years since the Ringwood shopping complex first opened in , opposite Ringwood railway station on Maroondah Highway.

It first included a Myer, Safeway and 40 speciality stores and was a mere 16,sq m. Tell us below. But all this depends on getting the necessary approvals for the redevelopment from Harper Woods' City Planning Commission and City Council. If the project is approved, it would mark the end of a year-run for Eastland, and the demise of yet another mall in metro Detroit.

The shopping mall was auctioned off in the fall of by the mall's "special servicer" after the owner was foreclosed on for defaulting on the mall's commercial mortgage. But now the New York-based investment firm is selling the mall to Northpoint, a deal that's expected to close within 90 days. Malls like Summit Place in Waterford Township and Northland Center in Southfield have closed in recent years , in part due to competition from e-commerce.

And consumer preference has only shifted further to online shopping during the pandemic. Opened in , Eastland mall was part of a group of shopping centers built and managed by J. It was originally anticipated to be suburban Detroit's first major shopping mall, but construction was delayed by a steel shortage brought on by the Korean War. In recent years, the mall has lost a long list of anchor tenants , including Target, Macy's, Sears and Burlington.
